Linguistic diversity and the bilingual lexicon: The Belgian Story

چکیده

Analogous to Malt, Sloman, Gennari, Shi and Wang (1999) we examined the relation between linguistic categorization and similarity of artifacts by Dutch-speaking and Frenchspeaking monolingual Belgians. We replicated the dissociation between naming and sorting found by Malt et al. (1999) for speakers of English, Chinese and Spanish. We also investigated the relation between the two naming patterns of bilingual Belgians, raised simultaneously in French and in Dutch, and how these naming patterns can be linked to the naming of the monolinguals. The results showed that the French and Dutch naming pattern of the bilinguals didn’t parallel the respective naming patterns of the monolinguals, but rather merged into a common naming pattern.

Multi-Modal Representations for Improved Bilingual Lexicon Learning

Recent work has revealed the potential of using visual representations for bilingual lexicon learning (BLL). Such image-based BLL methods, however, still fall short of linguistic approaches. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective multimodal approach that learns bilingual semantic representations that fuse linguistic and visual input. These new bilingual multi-modal embeddings display ...

Initial Bilingual Development: One Language or Two?

It is claimed that bilingual children have two separate linguistic systems from early ages. Over the past decades, linguists carried out a number of studies to test the validity of the claim. They explored bilingual children’s code-mixing in correlation with a variety of linguistic elements, such as lexicon, syntax, phonology in different contexts, concluding that bilingual children had separat...

A Linguistically Grounded Graph Model for Bilingual Lexicon Extraction

We present a new method, based on graph theory, for bilingual lexicon extraction without relying on resources with limited availability like parallel corpora. The graphs we use represent linguistic relations between words such as adjectival modification. We experiment with a number of ways of combining different linguistic relations and present a novel method, multi-edge extraction (MEE), that ...

How bilinguals solve the naming problem q

If different languages map words onto referents in different ways, bilinguals must either (a) learn and maintain separate mappings for their two languages or (b) merge them and not be fully native-like in either. We replicated and extended past findings of cross-linguistic differences in word-to-referent mappings for common household objects using Belgian monolingual speakers of Dutch and Frenc...
